The House Edge Figure

There are basically two types of roulette tables. The American version features a double zero pocket besides the single zero pocket featured on the European roulette. Given that roulette is a game of chance, the probability is determined by dividing the total number of options available by the number of desirable outcome. If for instance you bet on one number then you have a probability of 1 out of 37 (European) or 1 out of 38 (American). The more the options to choose from, the lower the probability that you will choose the right number.

It is therefore important to note when think of what strategy to use that by choosing the European roulette over American roulette you have already reduced the odds against you. The European roulette has a house advantage of 2.7% while the American roulette has a house advantage of 5.26%.

Betting Options

There are several betting options in roulette ranging from betting on a single number to betting on 18 numbers. The payouts are higher for single or few numbers but decrease gradually as you increase the betting numbers. Choosing on a low number of bets reduces your odds of winning even though you stand to be paid more incase you win. Choosing on a higher number of bets increases your odds of winning but promises lower payout ratios.

Single number bet promises a payout ratio of 35 to 1 but has the lowest probability of occurrence.

Split number bet mean you are betting that the ball will rest on either one number or another which represents a double probability of a single bet. The payout ratio is 17 to 1.

Three number bet implies betting that the ball rest on one out of three numbers and this represent a payout ratio of 11 to1.

Four number bet attracts a payout ratio of 8 to 1

Six number bet means betting that the ball will come to rest on one of the chosen six out of the possible 37 or 38 and attracts a payout ratio of 6 to 1.

There are betting patterns which allow you to combine numbers in a specific way besides the possibility of betting on borders. Betting on borders mean that if the ball rests on one of the numbers bordering the number you have chosen then you are a winner and are entitled to a payout ratio of 7 to1.

Column or row bets offer a payout ratio of 2 to 1 and means you are betting on 12 out 37 or 38 numbers.

Even or odd bets promise the highest probability of 18 out 37 or 38 and attract the lowest payout ratio of one to one. This also applies to red or black bets and high or low number bets.
